Introduction
An Internet forum is a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content. Internet forums are also commonly referred to as web forums, message boards, discussion boards, discussion groups, discussion forums, bulletin boards, or simply forums.

Registered members of a forum, who are identified by unique usernames, may have additional privileges, such as the ability to edit their previous posts, start new topics, and control their individual settings and profiles. The profiles tend to include graphical avatars and signature blocks which are appended to their future posts.

Forums are a good place to learn, teach and promote. Most forums have a particular niche that they fulfill. So, if you have a particular question you need an answer for, or want to give your point of view about a topic, post it in a related forum and you will get the replies.

Maybe you're wondering why all that folk are answering questions on the web? Well, they're nice folk. But they may have an ulterior motive such as

  1. Promoting their business through their comments.
  2. SEO benefits for their websites through their signatures.
  3. Increasing their personal reputation that can lead to make money with forums.
Forums are full of people with tons of questions. If you can answer those questions and lead those people to a blog post or your storefront with even more relevant information, you can gain that customer and possibly other forum members who read that thread. You also get a useful link to your site.

Posting on forums is actually a very good form of form of promotion/advertising: It is free, and you can earn trust and respect from people in the forum. So when they see your links, on content or on signature, they become more inclined to click because you are a person they know.

But your should not splash your company or product all over the forum, that will just annoy people, and you can be banned from that forum. Just read the terms and conditions for the forums you join.

Your behavior in a forum can be extremely profitable or detrimental based on your attitude. If you are courteous, helpful, friendly, kind and post intelligently, you will get traffic from people clicking on your signature links. But if your use derogatory comments, bash other people or taunt them, it not only can destroy your credibility, you can be banned from that forum too.

And do not try to "oversell" your website/product in your signature avoiding "Click here!", "Buy Now!" etc. The idea is to make yourself know as a professional in your field and someone who can be trusted to do business with.
